Today, eBay is proud to be recognized by the Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards, a journalist-paneled prize which celebrates the world's most notable design projects around the world. It’s a chance for our industry’s leaders to identify the standout stars raising the benchmark for design.


This prestigious recognition, a first for the company, is a direct result of the recent wave of innovation across our platform—fueled by our new Evo design system. Having a unified, standardized design system is the first of its kind in eBay’s 30-year history, and Evo received honorable mentions in three key categories: UX, Large Business, and Enduring Impact.

In the beginning

A broken laser pointer shines a light on innovation at eBay.

It all started with a wild idea about an online trading post that led to eBay’s very first item ever sold: a broken laser pointer. And with that, a history of innovation began. 30 years later, we still see the world a bit differently, and continue to let unlikely inspirations fuel our best innovations.

Inspired design

A system inspired by how people discover and powered by their passion.

Evo’s foundational design elements are built to scale the world and evolve for the future. The system is more vibrant, flexible, and accessible than ever before. It has been designed to better resonate with and more richly represent our enthusiast community’s passions and shopping discovery behaviors.

We simplified and standardized the UX across all of our major interaction points in order to create a more unified experience no matter where you are in the world—while still building in flexibility for local market relevance and requirements. There are even AI tools built in for consistent application across regions, touchpoints, and languages.

We further integrated the product into our expressions through UI elements inspired by interactions like searching, saving an item, or highlighting a deal. This allows us to highlight our unique catalog and diverse community, creating a discovery loop where customers explore, find unique items, or browse distinctive eBay storefronts.

Evo not only changes the design of our product and brand experience, but actually reshapes how we think about design in our culture at eBay.
