    Numerals (general)

When to spell out numbers vs use figures in interface text

    Best practices

    • Use numerals for all numbers with the exception of years (see millions and billions)
    • Write out or use "s" in abbreviation (3 lbs)
    • Never use (s)

    Related concepts

    • Starting a sentence with a number

    Approximations and comparisons

Wording that signals estimates or numeric comparisons

    Best practices

    • Use “about” or “approx.” for estimates
    • Choose “more than” or “over” based on space (even though "more than" is grammatically correct)
    • Avoid approximations in money or compliance contexts

    Related concepts

    • Ranges (numbers)

    Currency

How to display a country or region's standardized system of money to make a purchase or to be paid

    Best practices

There are six defining factors to consider: currency symbol, placement, use of decimal separator, use of group separator and placement, and number of digits after decimal separator.

Frequently used countries and regions may include:

    • US - $1.00
    • UK - £1.00
    • DE - 1,00 €
    • FR - 1 €
    • China - CN¥1.00
    • Japan - ¥1

For more comprehensive guidelines for all countries and regions we support, visit the L10N wiki on currency formatting.

In Cross Border Trade (CBT) scenarios, the ISO code should precede the amount; follow ISO code guidance.

Avoid trailing zeros in marketing/ads content (Get $5.00 off when you purchase $10.00 or more).

    Related concepts

    • Ranges (numbers)

    Decimals

    Values with a fractional part

    Best practices

    • Use a period as the decimal separator
    • Max two decimals
    • Use a leading 0 for values under 1 ($0.50)

    Emoji

Visual characters expressing emotions, ideas, and symbols; used to modernize tone and add humanity or playfulness to communication

    Best practices

    • If emoji are used, their meaning should be universally understood as well as culturally and contextually appropriate
    • Use to enhance greetings or highlight positive experiences without detracting from content clarity
    • Use emoji as a visual aid; they should complement—not replace—words.
    • Reserve emoji for greetings and delightful occasions, not for transactional or instructional copy.
    • Never use to replace actual words or phrases, especially in product or UI content ("NO BUENO" for replacing words with emoji).
    • Avoid emoji in titles or critical surfaces unless guidance explicitly allows it.

    Fractions and mixed numbers

    Not whole numeric values

    Best practices

    • Spell out common fractions
    • Use numerals or decimals in specs and measurements
    • Don't mix fraction and decimal styles

    Related concepts

    • Decimals

    Measurements

How to format and display numerical values combined with physical units (e.g., length, weight, distance)

    Best practices

    • Include a space between number and unit: 12 in, 5 km, 200 ml
    • Exceptions often made for °C/°F and %: 72°F, 30%
    • No plural “s” on abbreviations: 5 km, not 5 kms
    • No periods: cm, not cm.
    • Don’t invent abbreviations: stick to widely recognized ones

If space allows, spell it out once in labels or help text, and use abbreviations in tight spots (tables, chips, axis labels).

    • 12 inches / 12 in / Length (in)
    • 5 feet / 5 ft / Height (ft)
    • 3 yards / 3 yd / Distance (yd)
    • 10 miles / 10 mi / Distance (mi)
    • 10 millimeters / 10 mm / Thickness (mm)
    • 15 centimeters / 15 cm / Height (cm)
    • 2 meters / 2 m / Length (m)
    • 5 kilometers / 5 km / Distance (km)
    • 8 ounces / 8 oz / Weight (oz)
    • 10 pounds / 10 lb / Weight (lb)
    • 250 grams / 250 g / Weight (g)
    • 3 kilograms / 3 kg / Weight (kg)

We don't support superscripts, so use:

    • 50 sq m / Area (sq ft)

    Related concepts

    • Fractions and mixed numbers

    Millions and billions

Clear ways to express very large values

    Best practices

    • Write out in a sentence (1.2 million) but shorten everywhere else (1.2M)
    • Only one "M" or one "B" - always uppercase and next to the numeral
    • Default to two significant digits; don't round up

    Related concepts

    • Thousands (1,000+)

    Plurals

how to display more than one of something

    Best practices

    • Write out or use "s" in abbreviation (3 lbs)
    • Never use (s)

    Ranges (numbers)

How to display spans of counts amounts or timeframes

    Best practices

    • Prefer words for clarity in text (e.g., 10 to 12 kg)
    • Use an en dash for date and currency ranges (e.g., Jan 1–4, $50–$60 million)
    • Avoid hyphens and ordinals (e.g., Aug 1-4, Oct 3rd)
